English For Life (EFL)

In recognition of the importance of meeting felt needs, IGo has maintained a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) program as an essential part of the Institute.  When engaging a host culture it is beneficial to seek to help in areas where they see a need for that help. Learning English is one of these “felt needs” in the country of Thailand.  The English For Life program is the ministry that comes from IGo’s vision to meet this need.

English For Life currently is operating an English center on the campus of North Chiang Mai University a few miles from the IGo headquarters.  Our goal is to teach English well as an avenue for building relationships that enable us to present the Good News and love of Jesus Christ to students there with the purpose of leading them into a dynamic relationship with Christ. We do this by:

Teaching well.  We encourage genuine class preparation and the use of proven techniques.  Our teachers receive training in workshops within EFL and from certification courses which they complete.  They work together sharing ideas, tips, and resources in order to better equip the team as a whole.

Establishing a friendship-centered atmosphere. Students are encouraged drop in and chat about their school assignments or the events of the day.  Drop-in tutoring is available, and we encourage our tutors to engage the students as friends.  Social events and outings are planned with students.  Our teachers and tutors are encouraged to connect outside of the English center with the students as well.

Openly living Christian lives. As relationships deepen with students and as trust is established by consistently delivering the quality English instruction we promise, it is important to openly share the love for Jesus that motivates us.  Our teachers are encouraged to be intentional about sharing personal testimonies of what God is doing in their lives and to live lives that exemplify what we want our students to become.  EFL teachers meet together weekly for prayer and encouragement.

Joining with Thai believers to reach the lost. EFL encourages its teachers to take part in local Thai churches or be a part of IGo’s church planting effort to create a natural link between the church and our students.  It is our desire to see students who come to Christ integrated into the local body.  Initiating joint activities with Thai Christians and employing Thai staff are also ways in which EFL seeks to link with national believers.

EFL is constantly changing and expanding.  More and more opportunities are continually becoming available to share Christ through teaching English.  If this is an avenue of service you would like to explore please contact us for more information.  English For Life may well be part of your next step.
